{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences dangerous incident with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel crossed the track right in his path
The alarming incident happened on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to swap his damaged front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two guys dashing across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a active circuit track officials can be allowed to just sprint across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the events
"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was informed that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were alerted and placed on standby to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy marshals were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was raised in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what transpired after that point"
